Having read this excellent memoir that peers deeply into familial abuse and neglect, the subtitle keeps coming up in different situations: Hoping Every Day That Someone Would Come To Help Us. Abuse is an insidious evil and this book exposes the fact that the silence and fecklessness of those who did nothing were perhaps as damaging as the abusers.
Sara Shaw and her family are amazing testaments to the healing power of faith, love, forgiveness, and family! Victims of abuse and neglect, especially children, all share the hope so beautifully captured in this book - they want to be asked about the possibility of abuse by family members, healthcare providers, teachers, neighbors, ministers, anybody! The book is challenging in that it leaves the reader feeling an obligation to deny abusers of one of their most effective and abusive tools – silence!
This is an amazing family and, somehow, their ability to demonstrate faith, grace, and hope after having lived through hellish abuse is so inspiring.
May their strong voices help others not suffer.
This is a heartbreaking story of a family struggling through a life filled with tragedy and abuse. Saddled with shame and guilt, they kept these secrets not just from the world, but from each other. When they found the courage to speak up, no one listened. I can't imagine the isolation and loneliness they endured.
I am inspired by their perseverance and how their love of God and for each other carried them through these dark times. I pray that sharing this story will help them heal and bring comfort to others who also suffer in silence.

I am a licensed psychologist and I firmly believe that this book is a must read for all heath care professionals( physical or psychological. It is rare that an author can capture the real, true feelings of tragedy and then the triumph that results from undying hope and perseverance! I applaud Sara Shaw for having the courage to write such an important book that takes all the skeletons out her familial closet!
