The Authors Showcase Series - A Virtual Experience of the South Florida Writers Association continues on SEPTEMBER 17, 2022, at 6:15 P.M. (EDT), with author SARA SHAW discussing her latest novel, TWO SISTERS AND THE FOUR LEAF CLOVER.

Sara Shaw devotes much of her time to enjoying her large family and friends. But it has always been important to her to find ways to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Writing has always been her passion but was put on the back burner because of work and family. However, now that she is in a later chapter of her life, she has found that her writing is a way to reach out to help others.

When Sara was a little girl in a small midwestern town, she’d search for hours in her backyard to find a four-leaf clover, believing it would bring good luck to her family. Finally, she found her lucky four-leaf clover, not expecting what would happen next.

After Sara’s mother’s death, her cousins called to console her, and they texted her a picture of the eight of them together when they were children. It hurt to know that the two sisters, Elizabeth, and Evelyn, had kept their families apart all their lives. But why? Once the cousins connected, speculation began to grow, and abet some surprising twists and turns, whispers of physical and sexual abuse emerged. Her cousins had grown up feeling desperate, worthless, and ashamed because no one cared enough to hear their cries for help.

Sara felt a powerful sense of urgency to tell this important story by writing a book that could help her cousins heal. However, as her cousin’s narrative unraveled, it was much more painful and devastating than Sara was prepared for. She stated, “Imagine for a moment living a life where every single day you desperately prayed for someone to come and save you.” 

When Sara recalls certain true-life events she wrote about in Two Sisters - an overwhelming sadness washes over her. “Even today, I’m still shocked to my very core.” Yet, Sara says her cousins’ remarkable courage far surpassed what she had ever known about them. “Helping them tell their story has changed my life forever.”
